Empowering Youth:
Transformative Internships to Keep Teens Out of the Legal System
This social enterprise is dedicated to preventing youth, aged 15 to 20, from becoming involved in the legal system. We offer a paid internship program that provides a transformative experience through our “Love is the Key” approach. Our interns develop life and social skills, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial acumen while gaining hands-on experience in all areas of our café, food truck, and smoothie bar.

This program is centered around providing at-risk youth with practical skills and knowledge necessary for the workforce. Through hands-on training in our smoothiez truck, bar, and cafe. Participants learn about customer service, food preparation, and business operations, equipping them with valuable job skills and work experience.
Our mentoring program pairs participants with experienced professionals from various fields. These mentors offer guidance, mental health and mental fitness, helping mentees navigate both personal and professional challenges. The program is designed to build confidence, foster resilience, and set the foundation for successful futures.
This educational program aims to equip youth with the foundational knowledge needed to make informed financial decisions. Covering topics such as budgeting, saving, credit management, and investing, the program prepares participants for financial independence and stability.

The Love Is The Key Model
True social enterprise requires a focus on long-term, sustainable transformation. Our “Love Is The Key” model, bolstered by a strong network of partners, aims to transform the lives of young people by preventing and disentangling them from the legal system throughout the DC, MD, and VA (DMV) region. In 2023, we established the Love Is Key DMV advisory collective to expand this impactful model across the region. Our mission is to develop the Love Smoothiez food truck, Smoothiez bar, and café, providing living wages, culinary arts training, financial literacy, entrepreneurial support, and comprehensive assistance to young people before they encounter legal troubles or to those already within the system. As the parent company of Love Smoothiez, a nonprofit organization, we are dedicated to building capacity and fostering meaningful change.
